The Cure

Your First Interaction With The Band / Artist

I saw Robert smith head-butting a ceiling with his hair and makeup ablaze, in the “never enough” video.

Walked into the lounge room and stopped dead – this man, I thought, is worth knowing.

Her portrait on the “Horses” album
How Did the Interaction Occur

I knew more about Robert Mapplethorpe, the photographer and soul friend of Patti’s, responsible for that cover shot.  Quickly I began to understand what artistry truly is, inside her songs.

‘Horses’, bought from Rocking Horse, can’t remember when, but it wasn’t soon enough.

Favourite Album by the Band / Artist

Banga!

Ray Lamontange

Your First Interaction With The Band / Artist

Standing late at night, in a small bedroom of my aunt’s stone house in Provence, I played “trouble” and was instantly in love.
How Did the Interaction Occur

Waiting for my flight to France, I read in Rolling Stone that Missy Higgins had this album as one of her top five. I immediately bought it, loved the devil dancing with the blindfolded woman on the cover, and I would gladly have this as a ‘desert island disc’ myself.
First Album Purchased by the Band / Artist and When

‘Trouble’, Heathrow Airport, 1996.

Favourite Album by the Band / Artist

Still is ‘Trouble’ – it flows and kicks around so beautifully.

Favourite Song by the Band / Artist

Trouble.

How Many Times Have you have Seen Them Live

Once only, at the River Stage in Brisbane.  I think by his expression, he wondered what the fuck I was on, as I could hardly contain myself.

Nick Cave

Your First Interaction With The Band / Artist

“Release the Bats”, by the Birthday Party.  That’s enough said.
How Did the Interaction Occur

I think 4zzz radio was playing him and I found out all I could from my Nick Cave loving mate at school. This was the record of his I owned and many hours of early drumming and screaming ensued.

The birthday party – ‘Hits’, 1994ish.

Favourite Album by the Band / Artist

Anything that passes my ears but I guess to answer, ‘Push The Sky Away’.

The B52’s

Your First Interaction With The Band / Artist

The ‘Rock lobster’ video – never has sea life sounded so psychotic.

How Did the Interaction Occur

I saw it on Rage.  What can I say?  The full madness of this band is best seen and not just heard.  I still have a video cassette of their clips around here somewhere…
First Album Purchased by the Band / Artist and When

‘The B-52’s’, 1994, vinyl.  Hell yes.

Favourite Album by the Band / Artist

‘Private Idaho’.  Spooky.

Portishead

Your First Interaction With The Band / Artist

On holiday up north and ‘Dummy’ did not leave my ears all week.
How Did the Interaction Occur

‘Dummy’ was hard to miss once released, it was played in every cafe around.  It is best enjoyed on vinyl though, really loud.

First Album Purchased by the Band / Artist and When

‘Dummy’, at a little arcade record store in Brisbane, 1994, then again in London on vinyl in 1996.

Favourite Album by the Band / Artist

Hmm…  ‘Dummy’, what can I say?  It’s as ingrained as the grooves on the record.

Bjork

Your First Interaction With The Band / Artist

High school was made brighter (if possible, having to wear a bright green dress) by her references to sewing things to knickers.  I’d never heard anything like her voice, nor mind.
How Did the Interaction Occur

Sharing Walkmans during double Maths…

First Album Purchased by the Band / Artist and When

Ooh I think ‘Post’, as soon as I could get it, then again on pink vinyl – still prized.

Favourite Album by the Band / Artist

The one with the hair on the cover (Medúlla)…covering her face… it’s all vocals.

Favourite Song by the Band / Artist

Jöga.

How Many Times Have you have Seen Them Live

Once at Festival Hall.  I was in the ‘kids’ section so couldn’t stand and dance.  Agony.
Total Amount Of Years Spent Listening To and Following The Band

Evelyn Glennie

Your First Interaction With The Band / Artist

This is the first deaf person to be admitted to the Royal College of Music; I only found that out this year.  Seeing her at QPAC was breathtaking.
How Did the Interaction Occur

My folks thought she’d be good to see, as I was the only percussionist at my school for years.  She truly is astounding.

First Album Purchased by the Band / Artist and When

I have only digital recordings.  My favourite still might be ‘Oxygen’, a collaboration with Bjork.

Favourite Album by the Band / Artist

Again, anything – she could drop a drumstick and I’d listen. Attentiveness is the key.

Favourite Song by the Band / Artist

Oxygen.

How Many Times Have you have Seen Them Live

Three times; the most surreal being in Windsor castle.

The Velvet Underground

Your First Interaction With The Band / Artist

Learning their self-titled ‘banana on the cover’ album with Silver Sircus.
How Did the Interaction Occur

James Lees said listen to this, learn these parts.  I obeyed, as it is always advisable to follow that man’s instructions.  I am thankful.

First Album Purchased by the Band / Artist and When

The Pogues

A best friend’s dedication to poking with them blaring.
